CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The son of late U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond has made it official and will seek an open South Carolina congressional seat.
Thirty-four-year-old Republican Paul Thurmond issued a statement Wednesday saying his seeking the 1st District congressional seat along the coast.
Thurmond had said just last week he was forming an exploratory committee.
Incumbent Republican U.S. Rep. Henry Brown is not seeking re-election. Brown will have served a decade in Washington when his term ends.
Thurmond's father was 100 when he left the Senate in 2003 after 48 years. He died later that year.
Another candidate with a famous political name is also seeking the nomination. The son of former Gov. Carroll Campbell, Carroll Campbell III, entered the race last year.
