The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is reviewing a request to investigate the North Myrtle Beach Public Safety director.
The city made the request amid allegations from "The Sun News" newspaper, claiming that William Bailey covered up a criminal domestic violence case.
In taped conversations, the newspaper says a former officer claims Bailey wouldn't let him seek arrest warrants for two people. One of the people has ties to a major contributor to Mayor Marilyn Hatley's campaign.
John Smithson, the North Myrtle Beach city manager, issued the following statement.
"In light of the allegations that have surfaced and in the interest of neutrality, today we contacted SLED to investigate this matter and do not know what action may be taken by SLED or by the City following SLED's review."
SLED spokesperson, Jennifer Timmons, tells NewsChannel 15 that the agency has received North Myrtle Beach's request for an investigation and will now review whether the case warrants a SLED investigation.
Bailey is now on administrative leave for an unrelated offense, lying about a handgun theft.
