Surfside Mayor Allen Deaton offered no statement to his constituents at the first town council meeting since his DUI arrest last week.
Some had expected Deaton to offer an apology or make a statement, and when he didn't, some residents were upset.
"It embarrasses the whole town. We need an apology," said Anna Dodge who's president of the town's concerned citizens group.
During public comment time, one resident told Deaton, "You really embarrassed this town," and the crowd erupted with claps.
Deaton slammed the gavel and told the crowd to, "please hold your applause. This is not a show. This is a business meeting."
Another man, Don Craig, wasn't as passionate with his thoughts on Deaton, but he did warn all of council to be on their best behavior.
"I urge the council not to take your responsibility lightly ... because the voters and the taxpayers are watching."
When public comment was over, a few of the council members took the chance to speak, but they kept it short.
Councilman Joseph Martin took time for a quick sermon.
"I'm sure many of the people here who are so ready to criticize consider themselves good Christians," Martin told the crowd and referred them to a Biblical passage.
"He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone," Martin told the crowd.
Deaton wouldn't speak to reporters and would only say he had no comment.
