(AP) -- South Carolina's top law enforcement officer says he is tired of the state having one of the highest violent crime rates in the nation.

State Law Enforcement Division Chief Reggie Lloyd announced Monday at a training seminar for officers from across the state that he is ready to make South Carolina one of the ten safest states in the country.

Lloyd says he can do that by having SLED concentrate on breaking up drug trafficking and gangs that have hundreds of neighborhoods across the state living in fear.

The SLED chief also wants to do more with education and opportunities to help prevent young people in those neighborhoods from becoming career criminals.

Lloyd says the days of SLED responding to every request from local agencies is over.
