To most of us, slavery seems like a problem eliminated years ago, but one Carolina group says it's still very much an issue.
Today, the Eastern Carolina Coalition Against Human Trafficking held a press conference to raise awareness about slavery. Law enforcement officials say human trafficking is a $31 billion a year business.
One South Carolina Law Enforcement Division officer attending the news conference, says human trafficking can happen anywhere there's an immigrant population, including here in South Carolina. "It's not so much that they're kept handcuffed or shackled but they're afraid, they live in the shadows, they're afraid to report what's happening to them, they feel like they have no place to turn to," said Lt. Buddy Wilkes, SC Law Enforcement Division.
If you see someone who you feel may be held against their will, call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
