The new year will likely be a tough one for Horry County, as the county council predicts a budget shortfall in 2010 and perhaps even in 2011.
County Council Chairman Liz Gilland tells NewsChannel 15 that council is preparing to tap into reserve funds.
Gilland says, with tax revenue down, Horry County needs to attract more business owners and permanent residents.
"We don't have the people coming here yet," said Gilland.
"The biggest thing will help will be when people up north can sell their homes - they're ready to come here. When they go from $40,000 and $30,000 a year taxes to our $2,000, that's an incentive that nothing up north can beat," continued Gilland.
Chairman Gilland says the county is trying to continue construction projects to keep people working.
Also, she foresees no plan to slash county jobs, saying that the county saw tough times coming nearly two years ago and, in response, decided not to fill many jobs vacancies when they opened up.
