This cold weather is keeping energy companies busy, though they say there is no threat of overtaxing the system.
Santee Cooper reports power usage for their South Carolina customers hit a peak seasonal high early this week of more than 5400 hundred megawatts.
That's still not as high as last winter's peak of more than 5600 megawatts.
Company officials say they're confident they have plenty of generating capacity to keep up with demand, especially since a new generating plant went on line a year ago.
"Cross unit 4 came on in October of 2008, so we're sure that we have plenty of power to provide for the needs of our customers. However, we do strongly recommend energy conservation," said Sherry Coleman with Santee Cooper.
Coleman said the utility recommends keeping your thermostat set at 66 to 68 degrees, and make sure to change your furnace filter often to conserve power.
