The Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the Red Cross broke ground today on its new emergency operations center.

Construction of the EOC is already well underway. It will be an expansion of the current red cross building on Pampas Drive. The 1,500 square foot facility will be funded by a $308,000 grant from the Air Base Redevelopment Authority.

Officials say the new EOC will be a big improvement over the small conference room they currently use. "To have a facility state of the art with the latest technology and room enough to get all of our volunteers and staff together to respond to a disaster will really mean a great deal to us," said Jim Ellis, Red Cross Disaster Chairman.

The concrete block building will be hardened to withstand at least a category 3 hurricane.
