(AP) -- GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - State officials say a report that estimates South Carolina lost nearly $100 million in revenue last year from unpaid sales tax on purchases made over the Internet is reasonable.
The Greenville News reports the University of Tennessee study estimates the state lost $94 million in 2009 and could lose as much as $569 million from 2007 to 2012.
State residents are supposed to pay sales taxes on Internet purchases in large part by filing out a line on their state income tax forms for "use taxes."
Several states have begun negotiating with Internet retail giant Amazon.com to get the company to collect sales tax.
Board of Economic Advisors Chairman John Rainey says South Carolina needs to join in as long as the state isn't put at a competitive disadvantage.
