(AP) -- Federal regulators are reviewing the safety design of two nuclear reactors planned in central South Carolina.

The State reported Monday that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission wants to make sure the buildings containing key parts of the South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. reactors can survive events like a plane crash or a hurricane.

SCE&G and the state-owned utility, Santee Cooper, want to build two new reactors at the V.C. Summer Nuclear Station near Jenkinsville in Fairfield County northwest of Columbia.

Westinghouse Electric Co. is designing the reactors for the nearly $10 billion project. Westinghouse says it should have answers to regulators' questions about the design by February.

SCE&G spokesman Eric Boomhower says the utility is confident the design will be approved
