(AP) -- President Barack Obama nominated a defense attorney to serve as South Carolina's next U.S. attorney.
The White House said Tuesday lawyer Bill Nettles of Columbia had been selected because of his distinguished career.
The graduate of The Citadel and Widener School of Law served as a public defender in Richland County from 1995 to 1997 before going into private practice.
Nettles now practices with his father-in-law, former judge and Charleston School of Law founder Alex Sanders. He primarily handles criminal defense and death penalty cases.
Nettles' appointment came with a handful of other federal legal picks. Obama tapped Circuit Judge Michelle Childs and attorney Richard Mark Gergel to fill seats on the state's federal bench and selected Williamsburg County Sheriff Kelvin Washington as the state's U.S. Marshal.
