A captain at the Darlington County Detention Center has been suspended without pay pending an investigation into allegations of misconduct in office.
The allegations first surfaced against Ed Turmel this weekend.
Police aren't giving any specifics, but say a number of issues are involved in this investigation.
Captain Turmel is the second in command at the Darlington County Detention Center.
Officials say he has about 20 years of experience on the corrections side of law enforcement.
Sheriff Wayne Byrd says they received a tip this past weekend regarding Turmel, and things just didn't add up.
Byrd says the sheriff's office immediately began an internal investigation and based on his preliminary findings, they thought it best to call in the State Law Enforcement Division to further investigate the allegations.
Byrd said they placed Turmel on suspension first thing Monday morning.
Tuesday afternoon, state police met with Sheriff Byrd to be briefed on the specifics of the allegations.
He plans to release more information when the investigation wraps up, and that's expected to happen in a few weeks.
Captain Turmel has worked with the Darlington County Detention Center for about four years. Before that, he was employed at the Florence County Detention Center.
