COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Three governors and scores of state officials, friends and family members have gathered to say goodbye to longtime South Carolina treasurer Grady Patterson.

The State of Columbia reports that former governors James Edwards and Jim Hodges joined current Gov. Mark Sanford at a funeral service for Patterson at Columbia's Shandon Presbyterian Church.

Patterson died Monday at age 85 of natural causes.

The Rev. Agnes W. Norfleet eulogized Patterson, calling him a fierce guardian of South Carolina's finances.

Patterson was buried with military honors in Elmwood Cemetery.

The World War II fighter pilot and retired Air Force general served as state treasurer for 37 years.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie, six children and 13 grandchildren.
