(AP) -- Verizon Wireless is investing $40 million to relocate a South Carolina call center, a move the company says will save 1,500 jobs.

The state Department of Commerce announced Thursday that the company is spending the money on moving a Richland County customer service facility to a new location within the county.

Commerce says the call center is the company's largest and operates 24 hours a day. The company says the move will help Verizon Wireless meet growing demand and retain 1,500 employees.

The project will also create about 100 construction jobs.

The new facility is expected to be up and running in late 2010.
