(AP) -- A sunken houseboat has leaked as much as 50 gallons of diesel fuel into a South Carolina lake.

The Index-Journal of Greenwood reports that the house boat sank Wednesday morning in Lake Greenwood. Cross Hill Assistant Fire Chief Corey Jones says authorities don't know exactly how much fuel leaked out. But the boat's owner says between 30 and 50 gallons of fuel were on board when the boat sank.

The spill spread about three acres across the lake. But authorities say they may have gotten lucky: wind and currents pushed most of the spill back toward the shore and into a small cove.

State and local environmental authorities are cleaning up the spill. A private clean up company has also been hired.
