COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The University of South Carolina plans to cut the pollution by its vehicles by 90 percent over the next five years.
University President Harris Pastides (Pas-TEE-dees) said Tuesday the Columbia campus will be the first in the statewide system to reduce its dependence on gas-powered vehicles.
University officials say that by 2015, most of the university's 400 cars, buses, trucks and maintenance vehicles will use some type of alternative fuel.
They will use ethanol, biodiesel, liquefied petroleum gas, electricity or hydrogen fuel cells. A hydrogen hybrid bus will be in the university's shuttle service next month.
Besides helping the environment, officials say the switch to alternative fuels may boost South Carolina's agricultural economy.
