This is the time of year when many retail stores bring on extra sales people to get them through the holidays. But state employment officials say holiday hiring is slower than usual this year.
Officials say, with the unemployment rate in the double digits, there's a lot of interest in the few sales jobs that are available. Officials say many retailers have waited to see how the shopping season is shaping up before they start hiring. "It's just got a slower start. Usually by October, people are starting to think about Christmas, and hiring, and we're just starting to kind of see some hiring starting about now," said Sheila Daniels, SC Employment Services.
Daniels says today, three retail employers posted job openings at the employment services office in Conway.
Many don't require any prior retail sales experience for new hires.
