Many people will be going online in hopes of avoiding the big shopping crowds on Friday, But the Better Business Bureau has some warnings before you provide your information over the internet.
First, beware of phishing. That's when a company claims there a problem with your order and asks for your personal information. Legitimate companies will not send emails claiming there's a problem.
Also confirm your order is secure. Look for the "S" in the HTTP:// on the address box. Also look for the lock symbol in the lower corner.
You should also consider paying with a credit card. That's because under federal law many buyers have a zero liability policy under the agreements issued by the card company.
