This week, the Salvation Army of Florence is taking applications from needy families this Christmas.

Major Brenda Grice has been an officer with the Salvation Army for 30 years. She says she's seeing a lot of first timers. "They've never asked for assistance, and it is a very humbling experience for many that come through our doors."

Last year, the organization helped 700 families provide toys for their children, and they're eager to do the same this year. Grice said, "That's what it's all about - giving and helping."

More than ever, Grice says they're counting on donations through their kettle program to make Christmas a little brighter for families in need this holiday season.

Applications for Christmas help will be taken until Friday at the Salvation Army office in Florence on Hoffmeyer Road.
