Arson is a big problem across the US, according to Myrtle Beach Fire Marshal Bruce Arnel.

More than 300 fire investigators from both North and South Carolina are in Myrtle Beach for an annual conference on how to fight the war on arson.

Demonstrations were held to show students the effects different types of accelerants and then how a fire starts.

It's a scientific process for arson investigators.

"The instructors here today will bring the students in after the fact and explain to them to different burn patterns and different characteristics that are associated with the different types of accelerants that may or may not have been used. And it will aid them in their scientific investigation," said Myrtle Beach Fire Marshal Bruce Arnel.

Arnel says he hopes these demonstrations will further educate these experts to help them with future investigations.
