COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Two South Carolina high school teachers have won a national teaching award and its $25,000 prize.
Katherine Henderson is an English teacher at West Ashley High. Kenya native Robert Ondere (on-DARE'-uh) teaches algebra at Lugoff-Elgin High.
State Schools Superintendent Jim Rex surprised the winners Tuesday in separate student assemblies in Charleston and Kershaw counties.
The annual Milken Family Foundation National Educator Awards go to exceptional teachers who inspire students and colleagues.
Educators are recommended without their knowledge.
The awards were created in 1985 to reward, retain and attract top teachers.
Winners will travel to Los Angeles next spring for workshops and to receive their $25,000 awards, which they may spend however they wish.
