UNION, S.C. (AP) -- About 400 people gathered to pray in a South Carolina county rocked by scandals involving several officials.

Multiple media outlets reported citizens gathered at the Union County Courthouse steps Wednesday for a prayer service organized by local ministers.

Union County Supervisor Donnie Betenbaugh, former county tax assessor Willie Randall Jr. and former Sheriff Howard Wells were indicted on various federal charges last week.

Clerk of Court Brad Morris resigned Oct. 9, the same day a State Law Enforcement Division investigation of bank accounts managed by the clerk of court's office was announced.

The senior pastor of New Life Baptist Church, Shep Bevis, says he thought the community needed a prayer meeting following problems.
