Police say two Florence men didn't have success in a couple of attempted robberies.

Major Carlos Raines said the men tried to rob a store on Irby Street Thursday, but ran after they thought the clerk had a gun.

Raines says minutes later they tried to hold up a cab driver on Chestnut Street in Florence.

He says one of the suspects hit the driver in the back of the head with a gun.

The cab driver stopped the car, got out and began screaming for help and the suspects ran away.

Courtney Williams and Sean Spates were later charged.

They face two counts of attempted armed robbery. Williams was already out of jail on bond on charges of robbing another cab driver last year.
