(AP) -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has suspended a county supervisor charged with multiple crimes, including drug distribution.
Sanford spokesman Ben Fox says Sanford issued an executive order Wednesday suspending Union County Supervisor Donald Betenbaugh from his official duties until he is either acquitted or convicted.
Federal prosecutors announced Monday that Betenbaugh had been charged with witness tampering, lying to agents and illegally distributing an anti-anxiety drug. Prosecutors say Betenbaugh and former Union County tax assessor Willie E. Randall Jr. also allowed Randall's office to be used to store cocaine and other drugs.
Fox says Sanford's attorneys are looking into appointing a replacement for Betenbaugh.
