CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- The youngest son of the late South Carolina Sen. Strom Thurmond is getting out of politics, at least for now.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Wednesday that 33-year-old Paul Thurmond has decided against running for re-election to Charleston County Council.
Thurmond has been on the council since 2006.
He cited the growth of his law firm's civil litigation, which has forced him to skip votes on a number of issues confronting county council. He has a wife and two children, ages 2 and 4.
Thurmond says he could return to politics, pointing out his father lived to 100.
His older brother, Strom Thurmond Jr., is the elected chief state prosecutor for three counties near the Georgia state line.
