(AP) -- FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) - Soldiers in boot camp are getting something new this year besides rigorous basic training - Army-green bottles of hand sanitizer gel.

The bottles that fit neatly in a uniform pocket are part of a stepped-up effort by the military to ward off swine and seasonal flus.

Fort Jackson, S.C., is the Army's largest training installation. Soldiers here and at other boot camps are also getting barked at by drill sergeants to use alcohol wipes and cough into their sleeves.

The new H1N1 swine flu has intensified efforts this year to learn from the past. The 1918 global flu pandemic hit hard at big
Army training camps.

Besides requiring flu vaccinations, the Army is teaching recruits to do things including keeping six feet away from people coughing or sneezing.
