The deadline is up. Officials with Governor Mark Sanford's office are starting the process to remove four Dillon County election commissioners, after they failed to comply with a request from the governor.
NewsChannel 15 first broke this story two weeks ago when we learned not one of the five Dillon County election commissioners are certified, according to the SC Election Commission.
State law requires county election commissioners to complete a program of classes within 18 months of being appointed. The governor's office sent a letter to the commissioners asking them to provide an explanation of the number and types of classes taken by Friday, September 25th or the governor will begin the process to remove them from office.
The governor's spokesman, Ben Fox, says Commissioner Joseph Gleason has resigned. The governor's office plans to contact the local legislative delegation about sending more names to their office to be considered for appointments to the commission.
