It has been 20 years since the Hurricane Hugo rocked the South Carolina coast and Saturday night folks in our area celebrated being in the clear over the last two decades since Hugo and they also made sure they were prepared for the next major storm.
Dozens and dozens of people turned out at East Bay Park in Georgetown County Saturday evening, as well as emergency personnel, disaster organizations, weather forecasters and all things hurricane-related.
Officials relayed important information -- evacuation plans, storm insurance, and home protection.
"We haven't had a storm in 20 years -- a major storm -- and we're afraid people are getting complacent," said Cindy Grace, Georgetown County Emergency Management Coordinator.
"We wanted to have something that will bring everyone together. We have vendors who are here that could teach them about that because people don't think about it," continued Grace.
1989'S Hurricane hugo destroyed homes, flooded communities and killed 13 South Carolinians.
