A 28-mile stretch on the Grand Strand known as the Southern Evacuation Lifeline (SELL) is still years away. But some new money means the transportation department can speed up that process.

The DOT received several hundred thousand dollars from a federal earmark to begin an environmental impact study. The DOT will study an alternate route that stemmed from public comments after they proposed the first route a couple years ago.

The route would go from Highway 22 at 501 all the way to Highway 17 near Surfside.
