(AP) -- A former South Carolina prosecutor and eldest son of a Republican congressman is running for attorney general.

Alan Wilson said in an e-mail Friday he will formally announce his candidacy as a Republican in the 2010 election on Tuesday in Columbia. He becomes the first candidate to seek to replace Republican Attorney General Henry McMaster, who is running for governor.

Wilson was an assistant solicitor in Lexington County from 2003 to 2006 and an assistant attorney general from 2007 until January of this year. Between those jobs, the National Guard major served a year in Iraq.

He is the oldest son of U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina. He and his wife, Jennifer - a former broadcast reporter - have a 1-year-old son. Their second child is due in December.
