Recent traffic fatalities in Darlington County have prompted the sheriff there to put out speed trailers.

One of the trailers is directly across from the Darlington Raceway.

The portable units are equipped with a radar unit that can check the speed of oncoming traffic.

If a driver goes over the posted speed limit, the trailer will flash and display a message telling the driver to slow down.

"Anytime we can get the public to slow down on their own, it's a tremendous help to us," said Sheriff Wayne Byrd.

The sheriff's department received the trailers through a federal grant.

The units will be placed in high traffic areas and residential communities, where there are problems with speeding.
