SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- School officials say a South Carolina elementary school student took an unloaded gun and some bullets to class last week.
Multiple media outlets reported a Cowpens Elementary School student has been charged with illegal possession of a gun after officials one in his bookbag on Aug. 27.
The boy was not identified but principal Cindy Snead said in a letter to parents that he is no longer enrolled at the school.
Snead says officials don't think the gun was loaded at school.
Officials were alerted by another student who had seen the gun.
Snead and a Cowpens police officer went to the child's home and found the weapon in the boy's bookbag.
A police report states the boy took the gun from the glove box of his mother's car.
