Thursday afternoon, Senator Jim DeMint visited students at Francis Marion University to talk with young voters. The visit turned into town a hall meeting with a lively discussion on health care.
Senator Demint was was met by dozens of residents from all over Florence County, who wanted to talk about President Obama's proposal to overhaul health care.
The conservative republican opposes it.
"We need to make sure every American has a health care plan that they can use and keep for a lot less money that they're talking about today. We can do it without a government take over of health care," said DeMint.
He told the crowd that President Obama's proposal would take away people's private insurance and take away $500 billion from Medicare. Several people asked the senator questions and some agreed with his stance that the federal government shouldn't control health care.
"I do not understand how our government is supposed to pay for it," said Murray Jordan of Florence.
DeMint also said, "Let the private market work. Make them compete. Make there be thousands of choices. Put in every American's hands the means to buy health insurance."
For those with pre-existing conditions, people insurance companies are reluctant to or won't cover, DeMint says states should offer affordable insurance plans for them.
Everyone remained civil in their discussions, and many say the event allowed them to learn more about DeMint's views.
