SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. (AP) -- The Army and the Air Force are coming together to celebrate the beginning of a new headquarters for units in charge of American ground forces in the Mideast.
Groundbreaking for a new 3rd Army headquarters was set for Monday at Shaw Air Force Base in central South Carolina.
The Army is coming to Shaw because its headquarters at Fort McPherson in Georgia is being closed under the base closure process known as BRAC. It puts them alongside Air Force planners at Shaw responsible for the Mideast air operations.
The move is supposed to be done by 2011, with some soldiers and families arriving next summer.
