GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- Experts say the number of health care workers in South Carolina disciplined for drug problems is on the rise and more in the profession are battling addiction.

The Greenville News reported Wednesday that 170 doctors and nurses were disciplined by South Carolina licensing boards for drug problems in the past fiscal year, which ended in June. That's a jump from the 121 doctors and nurses disciplined in the previous year.

The director of the South Carolina Recovering Professional Program, Frank Sheheen, says drug addiction is now running higher among health care professionals than for the general public.

Ten percent of the public is addicted to alcohol and drugs. That number is at least 12 percent for health care workers.
