Hundreds of mattresses from residence halls at Coastal Carolina University avoided heading to the landfill and instead will be sent to Ohio to be recycled, the university said Tuesday.
According to a release sent out by CCU, the university purchased 1,000 new mattresses from University Sleep Products, Inc. which arranged for the old mattresses to be recycled.
"They're actually going to deconstruct the old mattresses, melt down certain parts, reuse other parts for certain things, and just put them to good use," said Lauren Anderson with University Sleep Products.
A Georgetown company will receive and recycle the plastic wrap that encased the new mattresses.
CCU said the recycling was part of its Sustainability Initiative.
