Despite weeks of protest from some Myrtle Beach businesses and residents and even a lingering lawsuit, a sales tax went into effect in the city Saturday.
The tax will fund tourism promotion on the Grand Strand, and after two years, 20 percent of the tax revenue goes to property tax relief.
There has been support for the tax -- some say that in the long run it will help the business community. Others arguing they've been taxed enough.
Friday, former Myrtle Beach Mayor Mark McBride filed a lawsuit against Myrtle Beach, claiming city council did not follow the proper procedure in passing the tax. McBride says its implementation is illegal.
Myrtle Beach Spokesman, Mark Kruea says the city acted correctly.
