COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The USO service organization that assists servicemen and women is setting up a center in South Carolina at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. Ike McLeese of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce said Wednesday the new center will cater to the thousands of troops who go through the airport annually.
The airport has a 1,200-square-foot lounge that had been a business center, but in recent months was manned by local volunteers to assist military men and women and their families.
McLeese says the United Services Organization is in large cities, but local leaders lobbied for a center in South Carolina.
He says large numbers of military personnel fly out of Columbia from Fort Jackson, Shaw Air Force Base and the South Carolina National Guard.
