Nominees accepted for seat vacated by suspended school board member

The Horry County Board of Education is now accepting nominees to fill a seat vacated when Governor Mark Sanford suspended the member.

Sanford suspended District 10 school board member Chris Shannon last month. Shannon's accused of diverting $98,000 from his former employer and putting the money in his own account.

Here's the information provided by Horry County's Board of Education, to apply:

The Horry County Board of Education is seeking a nominee to fill a vacancy in its membership for the seat representing District 10. The vacancy will be filled by appointment of the Governor until the 2010 general election, at which time a member will be elected from District 10 for a term of four years, or until such time that the Governor reinstates the suspended Board member.

Persons interested in being considered must:

*Reside in District 10, which includes the following Horry County election precincts: 101-Adrian, 102-Allsbrook, 105-Bayboro (portion), 120-Daisy, 127-East Conway (portion), 134-Floyds, 143-Green Sea, 144-Gurley, 145-Hickory Grove, 146-Hickory Hill, 163-Live Oak, 164-Maple (portion), 168-Mt. Olive, 169-Mt. Vernon, 177-North Conway #2 (portion), 178-Nortion, 186-Pleasant View, 191-Red Bluff (portion), 194-Salem (portion), 198-Shell, 203-Spring Branch, and 215-White Oak.

*Completed forms must be addressed to the Chairperson of the Horry County Board of Education at the above address and be received no later than 5:30 p.m. on July 31, 2009.

Following receipt of the filing materials, the Board will meet to review the filing materials and will interview the candidates as the Board determines. Following the interviews, the Board will meet and select by majority vote one person from the eligible candidates to recommend to the Governor. Questions concerning the above should be directed to the Office of the Superintendent.
