About 250 people in our area will be out of work as Arcelor Mittal has officially shut its doors.

The steel mill announced in May it would suspend operations at the plant indefinitely, saying that the recession has caused a significant drop in the need for steel.

As part of a union agreement, the workers were able to stay employed there for about 60 more days.

Company officials say that they don't know what the future holds for the mill, and if and when it will reopen.

Meanwhile, Steelworkers Union President James Sanderson says that he is confident that they will reopen when the economy recovers.
