233 years ago, a small group of American soldiers held off a British fleet of 20 ships with only 26 guns. The Battle of Sullivan's Island on June 28th, 1776 was the inspiration for part of the South Carolina state flag.
The Palmetto tree was added to the flag to represent Colonel Moultrie's defense of the Palmetto-log fort on Sullivan's Island. Now, the 28th of June is celebrated as Carolina Day. There are events going on to celebrate through the weekend.
There are artillery and musket shows at Fort Moultrie in Charleston Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.
