Georgetown County schools and Coastal Carolina University held the first of eight free swimming lessons Saturday for children with an inability to swim.

Almost 40 kids showed up at the Williams Brice Recreation Center pool at CCU where they were given free lessons and some time to enjoy the water.

The kids were chosen by the school district, and the idea came about after the drownings of three Sandy Island residents in February.

For more information on how you might be able to get involved, contact Gibson Darden, director of the School of Health, Kinesiology and Sport Studies at CCU by calling 843-349-2944.
