SC legislative panel approves voting ID bill

(AP) -- South Carolina legislators have approved a bill to require voters to have a photo identification when they go to the polls.

The bill also allows for two weeks of early voting before an election. The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday sent the bill to the Senate for debate after a subcommittee combined the two measures into a single bill last week.

Democrats oppose the requirement that people produce a photo ID before voting. But they've been pushing legislation that allows people to go to the polls early as a way of encouraging more people to vote and to shorten lines on Election Day.

The South Carolina Progressive Network says there's no evidence that people are impersonating other voters.

The bill faces long odds of passage, with the Legislature adjourning next Thursday.
