Monday, a state panel that will study harnessing the power of the wind to generate energy will have its first meeting.

The Wind Energy Production Farms Feasibility Committee was set up by a law last year that explores alternative energy.

At their meeting Monday, they're expected to discuss where current research projects stand.

There are already studies going on off our coast by Santee Cooper, Coastal Carolina University, and the South Carolina Energy Office.

They have deployed the buoys in a project called "Palmetto Wind" to try and determine if we have enough wind offshore to sustain a wind farm.

The offshore towers will observe the winds for a year, with the entire study taking 18 months.
