A warning to procrastinators - you have less than 24 hours to file this year's income taxes. But even if you've already filed your return, you still have a chance to take advantage of some new tax credits.

Heather Rangel is among those who wait until the last minute to file their taxes.

"Other things come up so I'm just like, ok, now is about the time to get it done, so usually I just don't think about it," said Rangel.

Last minute filers have more things to consider as they prepare this year's returns.

For example, if you're a home buyer, you may qualify for a credit of $8,000 and you can still amend your return and get that money, even if you've already filed your taxes.

"We have found a lot of people are under the assumption that once they've done their taxes, they cannot claim this credit, a lot of people are thinking they've got to wait until they file next year to claim this credit, but that's not the way that it is," Kim Davis, Liberty Tax Service.

The tax deadline is staring a lot of folks in the face.

"It kinda creeps on them," said Davis.

Most who hold off until the last minute have complicated returns that take more time to prepare.

"A lot of people come in thinking they're going to owe and they walk out of here surprised that they're getting a refund back," said Davis.

Davis says her business is way up this year, in part because, with new rebates and credits, people are more confused about their taxes.

They try to do their return on their own, run into problems, and end up here.

But she says with the economy the way it is, tax preparers are trying harder to get something back for their clients.

"Everyone needs the extra income," said Davis.

According to the IRS, more than 76 percent of all tax returns have been filed electronically this year.
