Thursday, ScienceSouth, a hand's on learning program, received a half a million dollars in grant money from NASA.

ScienceSouth is a non-profit group focusing on math, science and technology education.

The program allows students to explore the world of science through hands-on projects.

Officials say money couldn't have come at a better time.

"The timeliness of this is extremely important towards the growth and continuation of Science South as a viable entity to go out and really augment with our public education system," said Dick Powell of ScienceSouth.

The ScienceSouth program has been around since 2003.
