A bill that would allow towns in Horry County to raise their sales tax by a penny has passed its first hurdle.
The state Senate passed the measure Thursday, and it now moves to the House.
Revenue from the sales tax increase would be used for tourism promotion.
Representative Thad Viers of Horry County, one of the sponsors of the bill, says it could come up for debate in the House as early as next week.
If all towns in the county passed the tax, it could raise nearly $60 million a year.
