A steel manufacturer in our area will shut down for a while as a result of the struggling global economy.
Arcelor-Mittal will temporarily close it's plant in Georgetown.
240 hourly employees will be laid off during the closure.
There's no word on how long the shut down will last, but it's expected to be less than a month.
Adam Warrington, Manager, External Communications at Arcelor-Mittal, said in an email to NewsChannel 15, "This was a difficult decision to make, but the company is being forced to respond to the extraordinary economic environment we are facing. We will be carefully monitoring the situation and we look forward to many of our employees returning to work as soon as it is warranted by market conditions."
Warrington says the company will continue to work with the United Steelworkers to minimize the impact on their employees and their families.
