During this Black History Month, the Florence County Historical Commission is honoring the life of an African American state representative who was assassinated during the late 1800's.

A historical marker will be unveiled Sunday at the very site where Alfred Rush was murdered in 1876.

The site, which is at the intersection of Cummings and John Paul Jones Road, was a part of Darlington County during that time.

Represenative Rush was coming home with his wife when he was assassinated.

Randy McAllister is on the Florence County Historical Commission and Rush's relative.

He fought hard for the marker.

"His contributions to the community far outweighs the senseless assassination.  He worked for all people in the community," said McAllister.

Alfred Rush represented Darlington County in the South Carolina house for two terms during reconstruction.

The unveiling ceremony takes place Sunday afternoon at 3pm.
