(AP) -- South Carolina regulators have unanimously approved a request by the state's largest private utility to build two nuclear reactors, meaning higher rates for electricity customers.
The South Carolina Public Service Commission vote Wednesday gives South Carolina Electric & Gas the right to begin raising electricity rates next month to help pay for its portion of the $10 billion project.
Protesters shouted at commissioners after the vote, saying they had sold out South Carolina rate payers.
Opponents said the project was unnecessary and too expensive, but commissioners agreed with the company that more generating capacity was needed to meet future demands.
